My work is inspired by my experience as a teenage immigrant from Taiwan. The background of blue sky and white clouds symbolise my impression of New Zealand; a clean and breathable environment where I am free to express myself. I have combined what I see with my eyes, the sky of Auckland, and who I am, my identity as an immigrant, onto one piece of canvas such that these factors exist in harmony within one medium of my reality. As the portrait disappears into the sky of Auckland, I find myself immersed in this culture whilst still reaching out to my traditional roots. The masked eye of the portrait symbolises how I am torn between the fixation of a bright, beautiful ideal in which I see on a daily basis. I wonder if my eyes have deceived me with the dreary yet familiar illusion of home, whilst in reality I am being lost between these two worlds, where I belong and where I currently reside.
